Dathan Kane (b. 1991) is a contemporary abstract artist based in Hampton Roads, Virginia and holds a BFA in Art & Design from Virginia State University. His work focuses on the constant dualities that define the human experience; order and chaos, presence and absence, choice and consequence. These themes take shape using bold, organic, black & white shapes to explore this complexity and present a sense of balance. Dathan‘s work has been acquired by private collectors across the U.S alongside Germany, London and France. Other collections include Dollar Tree HQ, Work Programs Architects at Assembly in Norfolk, Within Interior Design Firm in Norfolk, PMA Architecture in Newport News, Commune in Virginia Beach/Norfolk, Capital One collection, Newport News City Mayor collection, Hampton Roads Biomedical Research Consortium (HRBRC), Abbitt Realty Company collection in Newport News, Virginia Department of Health, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
He has exhibited at the Assembly Norfolk, Chrysler Museum (Glass Studio) Gallery, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (VMOCA) , Hermitage Museum & Gardens, Southside Contemporary Art Gallery RVA and the Sichuan Contemporary Institute in China. Dathan has participated in the “More Than Art” mural project, RVA Street Mural Festival, Three Notchd “Leave Your Mark!” mural festival in Richmond and has completed a two week residency program at Studio House in Baltimore contributing two murals. He is a participant in the annual “Cabin Fever” auction held at 1708 Gallery in Richmond VA , “Collector’s Night” annual auction held at the Visual Arts Center RVA as well as the Oakwood Arts annual “SOLSTICE” auction held in Richmond. His documentary film, CURATE, produced by P.B.S “WHRO Media” in Norfolk has aired throughout Hampton Roads, Boston, and North Carolina (2022). Dathan recently completed a mural project for White Claw during Pharrell’s “Something in the Water Festival” in VA Beach (2023) , Portsmouth “Wall Street Mural Festival” (2024) Bush Gardens Williamsburg “Summer of Wonder Festival” (2024) and the “Supernova SKA Festival” (2024) in Hampton VA. He was a recent participant in the Newport News Street Museum Mural Festival (2023) in addition to the 6th annual Vibe District Mural Festival (2023). He recently completed a 4 week residency exchange program with “Visible Records” located in Charlottesville VA (2024) where he completed a mural installation as part 1 of his”WORLD OF SHAPES TOUR!”. Dathan has been featured recently on Cville Weekly, 13News Now, WTKR 3 News and Wavy- TV 10 News. He is presently a board member at the Hermitage Museum in Norfolk as well as the Contemporary Arts Network in Newport News.
