My paintings occupy the space between impressionism, cubism, and realism. As a 2006 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Communication Arts program, I studied illustration under several award-winning artists. This foundation, combined with years of professional illustration for publications such as Virginia Living, Richmond Magazine, Nebraska Wesleyan University Magazine, and the Military Officers Association of America, as well as graphic design and storyboard work for advertising and entertainment clients, continues to inform my fine art practice.

I approach each painting as a conversation. I begin with a subject or fleeting vision and respond directly to what happens on the canvas. While I render the subject realistically enough to make a strong impression when needed, I more often suggest form through abstract shapes, dynamic patterns, rich textures, layered passages, and forced perspective. Time is critical—visions are momentary—so the painting records a glimpse rather than a literal document, leaving a visual note for the viewer.

I apply oil paint with intention but also with a sense of controlled improvisation. Brushwork can be loose and energetic, while in other areas I use palette knives to build clouds and textures like icing, creating thick, tactile impasto that contrasts with thinner, translucent layers beneath. This interplay between haphazard energy and deliberate representation allows happy accidents to coexist with purposeful mark-making. The result is a surface that feels alive—both grounded in observed reality and open to abstraction—inviting the viewer to engage with the memory of a moment rather than a frozen image.
